Can unpredictable rewards improve player retention in entertainment platforms?

I’ve been thinking a lot lately about whether unpredictable rewards actually help keep players interested longer on entertainment platforms. A couple of nights ago my friends and I were playing a co-op game where one rare reward suddenly dropped after hours of nothing special happening, and everybody instantly became way more invested. That moment completely changed the mood even though the reward itself wasn’t game-changing. It reminded me of this article I came across recently: https://www.supportmeindia.com/field-placement-psychology-how-captains-force-mistakes/. It got me wondering if that same idea applies to modern games and streaming platforms in general. Personally I feel a bit of unpredictability keeps things exciting, but too much randomness can also become frustrating. Curious how other people feel about it.

This is a really interesting observation about how unpredictable rewards can influence motivation and engagement. Moments like rare drops create excitement, anticipation, and emotional investment because they tap into the psychology of surprise and achievement. Even small rewards can completely shift the energy of a group experience and keep people coming back for more. It’s fascinating how entertainment platforms use these patterns to maintain attention and participation. Similarly, an online class help service can keep students motivated by providing timely support, encouragement, and progress milestones that make learning feel more rewarding and engaging over time.
